Prior to all workshops, lesson plans are created with the outcomes of the workshop in mind which assist the lecturer in preparing the contents be covered in the lesson. A PowerPoint based on the lesson is created, which is important for the off-campus students for the online classroom. which is delivered. Usually the workshops are observed either synchronously or asynchronously and feedback from a fellow lecturer obtained. An example of one workshop has been attached.
Exam Preparation Workshop - a workshop is held during week 6 of each semester to assist students with preparing for the exams. During this workshop students are guided through time management principles that are applicable to preparation and exam time. Reflection
A teacher must reflect on the effectiveness of her teaching
Reflection is a form of self-evaluation, it means looking back, thinking about why you do something and then thinking about if it works or not. This can lead to a change in teaching.
During this semester I have been reflecting -in the workshops and student interactions and then reflecting on them now that the semester has ended. Overall, the lessons have been positive with excellent feedback fro the students. However, I have through peer-observation and self analysis realized that I do at times give too much information to students, I do not allow them to finish thinking by themselves - I need to stand back and allow them time to think. Perhaps I should push them a bit more. My philosophy is that I want students to become deep, critical thinkers, but at times I am allowing them to adopt surface approach by answering for them. This is definitely something to work on during the coming semester.
This semester has also seen me trial three new technologies with students. Usually I avoid using any new technology as I do not feel comfortable not always knowing how to approach the technology and then trying to find someone willing to help. All three new technologies used in the classroom were worthwhile, there were some imitations but a bit of planning and preparation before the lesson can go a long way to improving the situation.
An area, not in teaching, that I have also used a new technology in is designing this Personal Portfolio. This part of the course I believed would be impossible and I was almost ready to give up . But, having almost completed it I realize that the skills I have gained are transferable to computing at home and at work. By starting this page, I hope to build other pages and help students if they require assistance.
The tool of reflection is valuable in teaching and will continued to be used to improve my practices.
